Phidon's New Exclusive Fieldwork Co. Roll

If you’ve been following along on our blog or newsletter this year, you’ll know that our New Year’s Resolution was to stock more Canadian stationery. One of the new brands that we have brought in so far is Fieldwork Co., a small, family business out of Alberta.

This week, we’re pleased to announce our latest Phidon exclusive product: the Fieldwork Co. Deep Indigo Artist Roll!

The Indigo Wraps

The first time you see the Deep Indigo Artist Roll, you’ll immediately notice the contrasting colours: deep indigo waxed canvas with brown thread and matching brown leather accents. These colours were deliberately picked to invoke the classic, rustic dependability of denim. Right from the beginning, we wanted our exclusive roll to be associated with workwear that has been worn in with pride, as well as the satisfaction that comes from a job well done.

One of the biggest challenges when designing this product, believe it or not, was the tag! We wanted to keep Fieldwork Co.’s standard, minimalist design, so the tag couldn’t be too big. However, we also wanted to fit our logo, which takes up a lot of space! We ended up working with Fieldwork Co. to come up with a small, leather tag. The tag has both our logo and Fieldwork Co.’s name debosssed into leather that matches the other accents of the wrap. We love how it turned out, and we’re sure you will too!

Like our notebook collaborations with MacLellan Books, this special colour of Deep Indigo will only be available at Phidon.

About Fieldwork co.

Fieldwork Co. is an independent initiative by Isaac and Kristen Haines, and Isaac hand-makes all of the products that the brand puts out into the world. The idea for Fieldwork Co. came when Isaac identified a gap in the market, as he just couldn’t find the high-quality leather and waxed canvas goods that he was looking for.

Currently, we carry a small variety of Fieldwork Co.’s products, including the Artist Rolls, Leather Journal Cover, and Japanese Keychain. What we love most about the business, other than the story behind it, is the high-quality, minimalist designs. “Canadian” stories and lives are typically associated with words like “tough,” “rugged,” and “resilient,” which translate into these products perfectly.

We published a whole blog post on Fieldwork Co. back in January, and we’re so proud to have stocked additional products since then. We can’t wait to see what Fieldwork Co. releases next!

Artist Rolls for Everyone

Creativity goes beyond the ability to write a novel or paint a portrait. Creativity is problem solving, resourcefulness, and bright ideas in the face of adversity. That’s why we love the Artist Rolls so much: they enhance the ability to be creative for every kind of user.

If you are an artist, you can fit everything you need for on-the-go creation — pens, pencils, brushes, erasers, even small watercolour tins like the ones from Wanderlust Watercolour.

If you aren’t an artist, we’re sure that you’ll still find utility in these rolls! Since the waxed canvas rolls are water resistant, they’re great for taking out into the field (no pun intended). Maybe you only need a pencil for marking measurements, but you’d prefer to stock your roll with screwdrivers, screws, and a ruler. That’ll work!

If you’re going camping, these rolls are also versatile for little storage. They’ll keep your cutlery all in one place, or they can be an unassuming way to store ID, cash, and other valuables where they will stay dry.

At the end of the day, they’re also just perfect for storing your favourite fountain pens. Unlike many pen rolls, the different-sized pockets can accommodate everything from pocket-sized companions, like the Kaweco Sport, to oversized pens, like the Sailor King of Pen. Toss in an extra pack of cartridges, maybe a paper towel or two for changing ink, and you’re ready to take your pens on any adventure.

Thank you to our friends at Fieldwork Co. for supplying us with the behind-the-scenes photos featured in this blog post. You can find more photography of Fieldwork Co.’s work process on Instagram here.
