New Kaweco Coral Collectors Edition

The Collectors Edition Coral actually has “Collectors Edition” engraved on the cap, which is usually a feature reserved for much more expensive pens!

Unlike the special edition releases from some other brands, like the Lamy Safari and TWSBI Eco, the limited releases of the Kaweco Sport series usually pass without much fanfare. However, this Collectors Edition Coral is so gorgeous that we think you should know more about it!

The colour was picked by the members of the Facebook group “Kaweco Collectors & Users,” which you can join as long as you have a Facebook account. The Collectors Edition Coral matches Pantone’s colour of the year for 2019, “Living Coral.”

One of our favourite features of this pen is how it actually has “Collectors Edition” engraved on one of the edges of the cap. Though it is subtle, this is a thoughtful touch. As most special edition releases can only be recognized as collectors’ items by those already in the pen community, the engraving shows to everyone who looks closely enough at your pen, whether they are a connoisseur or not, that this pen is special!

On the other hand, pens with engraving or embossing announcing them as special edition often come with a very large price tag! Despite this detail, the Sport is still a very reasonable entry-level price at only $36, which makes it the best of both worlds. Though the pen is not numbered, it is a limited edition run, so when they’re gone, they’re gone for good.

The Kaweco Sport models are what is referred to as a “pocket pen,” meaning that they are so small they can fit into your pocket for on-the-go adventures. Many people use the Sport as their “everyday carry” pen, which is why it is the pen we chose for our Everyday Carry Writing Starter Kit. The Sport line is made out of many different materials depending on which model you’re looking at, but the Collectors Edition Coral is made of makrolon and is incredibly light. Its weight and size are identical to the Classic Sport and Skyline Sport: it gets a bit heavier when posted, but not by much! Posting the cap will mainly increase the length, not the weight.

The Sport becomes a full-sized pen once its cap is posted. The Collectors Edition is pictured here with a variety of Hobonichi products, a ‘70s Soul Kaweco Student, a Kaweco Al-Sport in black, and a Shorty Clutch Pencil in white.

Like all Kaweco Sport models, there are lots of nib sizes to choose from: extra-fine, fine, medium, broad, and double-broad. These sizes write fairly true to what you would expect from their names, as extra-fine is quite thin and double-broad really makes a bold statement! The nib is made out of steel, and the nib and the finial on the Coral Collectors Edition are both silver in colour.

The Kaweco Sport pens don’t have a clip built into them, a unique feature that Kaweco has on most of its models, but you can get a chrome or gold coloured steel clip or a black, bronze, gold, or silver coloured classic clip. All of these clips are sold separately and slip over the Sport’s cap for a snug fit.

The pens take an international standard short size cartridge, but don’t go putting just any international standard size converter inside! The barrel is so short that it will only fit the itty-bitty Kaweco mini converter. Though the finer nibs can handle any ink, the broader nibs tend to write quite wet, so it is probably a good idea to pair the pen with a bit of a drier ink. For the finer nibs, J. Herbin Corail des Tropiques would be a great match, and Diamine Coral is a good choice for broader nibs!
