Meet the 2021 Special Edition Lamy Safari Pens
One of the most anticipated special edition releases in our store every year is the Lamy Safari. The Lamy Safari is known as one of the most popular writing instruments for both those who are new to the fountain pen community and those who are avid collectors!
This year, Lamy has released two special edition pens in attractive colours that celebrate Lamy's extensive history. Believe it or not, the Safari was launched over forty years ago! The two original colours, Terra Red and Savannah Green, became highly coveted collectors items in the years since their release at the 1980 Frankfurt Fair. Luckily, it's become much easier to find these colours — Lamy has brought them back as the special edition colours for 2021!
Both of the colours have a black clip and finial. The ballpoint pens and rollerball pens have black tips and the fountain pens have grip sections that match their bodies and black stainless steel nibs. Terra Red is a terracotta red-brown, a rich colour that will suit any botanist or outdoor enthusiast. Savannah Green is a muted olive colour, a great addition to the pen roll of an adventurer or traveler. Both pens will be perfect for stationers that enjoy cozy, warm colours. They're not bright, so they won't hurt to look at, but they will also certainly make a statement!
The Safari is known as the best selling fountain pen in the world, so you won't want to miss your opportunity to have this piece of writing history made new! Both Terra Red and Savannah Green are available now at Phidon Pens.
Even better? The special edition colours are now available in our Lamy Fountain Pen Starter Kit! Choose the pen and nib of your choice, a medium dotted Leuchtturm1917 notebook, and a bottle of Lamy blue-black ink. If you're looking to match your notebook and pen, we recommend going for the Army Green Leuchtturm1917 notebook, which is almost a perfect match for Savannah Green!
About the Safari
Like all Lamy products, the Safari pens are an excellent combination of timeless design and modernity! Featuring the same classic design as the Lamy Al-Star and the Lamy Lx, the Lamy Safari is the most affordable option in the family.
This workhorse pen is made of sturdy ABS plastic and has a large, distinctive, coated metal clip. The limited edition colours come in fountain pens, rollerball pens, and ballpoint pens. All of the options have completely refillable ink bodies, and they all take proprietary Lamy cartridges, which you can find on our website.
If you're looking to hold your pen properly, the sturdy plastic grip section is also an added bonus. Safari pens feature a triangular grip section, which is perfect for a new fountain pen user to naturally develop the proper grip. The distinctive recessed grip guarantees both comfort and perfect ergonomics!
The fountain pen version features a reliable steel nib that comes in sizes extra-fine, fine, medium, and broad. The pen can be used with an ink cartridge or a converter, both of which are included with your purchase from Phidon. That means that you can fill your Safari pen from any fountain pen ink bottle!
If you prefer cartridges, which are great for taking on the go, you can pick up a pack of five to fit your Safari once your original blue cartridge runs out. If you’re wondering about the difference between a cartridge and a converter, you can read our full blog to find out more!
What's the best nib size?
Overall, the Lamy Safari fountain pen is a great choice for everyday use because of its attractive design, durable materials, and smooth nibs. If you're looking to get your first Safari fountain pen, you may be wondering what nib size is best for you! A fine nib is best for average-sized writing and average drawing. Medium nibs are great for those who write a little on the larger side. Extra-fine nibs are the best choice for those with tiny writing or for people who want to draw with super tiny details. Broad nibs have a little bit more flair and are a great choice for headings and large writing!
Looking for something even more special? Lamy nibs are interchangeable! That means that you can swap your original black steel nib for a silver steel nib, a stub calligraphy nib, or even a gold nib! If you’re left handed, you can even try the Lamy LH nib, which writes like a medium but is designed at an angle that makes leftie-writing easier. This also makes the Safari a great option for beginners because the nibs can be replaced if they are damaged, and you can also replace them with a new size if you decide your original choice isn't the one you want to stick with years down the line.
That said, you can rest assured that all Lamy fountain pens have a smooth writing experience, so you can't go wrong with any option you choose. Remember, the thicker the line, the more you’ll want high-quality paper. For a high-quality, fountain pen friendly paper at a beginner price point, we recommend trying Rhodia, Clairefontaine, and Leuchtturm1917.
